Well here is a bit of trivia to fit into that presumption; the relationship with the by far highest level of domestic violence are lesbian ones, the lowest male homosexual ones. Naturally that is met with a whole slew of justifications and victimization swapping but there is the truth. Studies also show across the globe and decades that women resort to both emotional and physicial violence as men, the only real difference being the physicial harm they can cause. And female-on-male domestic abuse is likely the most under-reported offense in the world.

I don't think we need to get over 'most' romance being heteronormative simply because it is and will continue to be. that doesn't mean we should exclude ignore the realities of non-heteronormative and, as mentioned earlier, they often give us more insights into relationships since we've removed gender assumptions or cross-gender assumptions and are just left with two people.
